Happy Summer: Part 5 NRG SUPER KIDS videos

What a treat… watching my class in action as I stitched together videos of some of our rehearsals for the  National Geographic Classroom Energy Diet VIDEO ChallengeEVERYONE  had worked SO HARD to put it all together. “Quiet on the set!” is not as easy as you might think, but the class did work (almost!) silently on other pen-and-paper challenges while the filming was going on.

Special thanks to our film crew, Amanda and William, who alternated with the flipcam and the class camera. We always had 3 cameras shooting at once!  Our “kids with signs” did a great job of coloring, decorating, and marching with their poster signs.  Our two “invisible men” expertly scooted in and out of the scenes and our “snowman makers” did a great job of struggling with our “fake window”.  Several students are to be congratulated for their super job of playing the energy-wasting old couple in the “living room” and our 2 NRG Super Kids were… ahhhh… SUPER!  A big round of applause to the old neighbourhood couple who did such an excellent job of being “interviewed” and a standing ovation to our News Reporter who gave a magnificent performance!

Thank you to everyone who called up all their family and friends to vote for us!  We did make it to the finals (and won that flipcamera!) but unfortunately we didn’t get that grand prize of a SmartBoard.  Too bad… the video would have looked FANTASTIC on a SmartBoard!

What we did win was the PRICELESS MEMORY of working together to make a REAL VIDEO for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC!  That’s something that doesn’t come along very often… it was certainly a “first” for this teacher!   I hope you all feel very proud of our hard work and who knows… maybe one or two of my students might grow up to work in the movies

Here is the 1 minute video (ah… gee… okay… it is actually 1 minute 3 seconds, but I just could NOT squish it down any further and meet the entry deadline!) that was entered into the contest.

Here is a combination of some of our rehearsals, put together into Scenes 1, 2, and 3.  The assignment challenge was to make a video to show how kids can help save energy.

The original “screenplay” (chuckle!) was as follows:
Scene 1. A News Reporter interviews an old couple in their neighbourhood, asking whether they think kids can make a difference to energy savings.  Kids are marching behind with posters that have energy saving tips on them, but the old folks don’t have a clue.
Scene 2. An energy-wasting couple are busy… wasting energy, of course, on a cold winter day (with kids making a snowman outside).  They are visited by the NRG Super Kids, who give them tips on how to save energy.
Scene 3. The News Reporter revisits the old couple , who have now heard about the NRG Super Kids and know that kids CAN help save energy. The marching kids flip their signs to say “kids can help”.

Another part of the (written) challenges was to make daily announcements on the P.A. system to encourage other students to save energy as well.  We then put these ideas into a presentation for our monthly Good Stuff Assembly in front of the whole school and visiting parents. This video is our rehearsal in the library.

Happy Summer – Part 4: Gr. 2 Bubble Party

The two “Mrs. B’s” got together to give their Grade 2 classes a wonderful “Good-bye” before the Summer Holidays began.  There is no place better than our own lovely Nestor Park to celebrate!  We started off with some “Bubble Fun“… and each student received their own “bubblemaker bottle”.  We had some activities in mind, but the Grade 2’s were having so much fun on their own that we just let them enjoy!  They blew BIG bubbles, LITTLE bubbles, DOUBLE bubbles, LONG LASTING bubbles, BUBBLES-ON-A-WALK bubbles, UPSIDE DOWN bubbles, and MORE!   Afterwards, we celebrated with Ice Cream floats (yum!)… there were LOTS of flavours to choose from.  What a great way to celebrate our soon-to-be Grade 3’s!!!

Here are a few photos from our LOVELY CELEBRATION!

Happy Summer – Part 3: Stuffie Picnic

If you go down to the Nestor woods today… you’re in for a big SURPRISE… because today was the STUFFIE PICNIC!  We had lots of STUFFIE FRIENDS to help us with Calendar and Clues & Questions! There was SO MUCH really GOOD FOOD for lunch.  We had ICE CREAM FLOATS and STUFFIE RACES too! It was a special way to end our Classroom 2 year of Grade 2!

Happy Summer Holidays… Part 1!

We are now on our “official Summer Holidays” but Mrs. B. has not finished with the Classroom2Kids Edublog yet!  (Mrs. B. hasn’t even finished dismantling the classroom either!  Oh dear!)

Her first project was to upload the “almost finished” Butterfly Life Cycle slideshows on the Student Blogs. Hurray! You will now find them uploaded!

https://classroom2kids.edublogs.org/about/student-blogs-classroom2kids/

A new addition for this year is the INVITATION to BLOG OVER THE SUMMER!  I think it would be a great way for the class to keep in touch, so I am inviting you all to tell us what you are doing on your holidays!  You can make comments to your classmates and even add photos… (but remember… no closeup photos of you in your own blog because it’s not “web smart” for students to put their photo in a place that also has their name!)

I’m hoping to READ some GREAT BLOGS over the summer!

Be watching too… I will be uploading some slideshows of the Year End Stuffie picnic,  Butterfly Freedom Day, and the Gr. 2 Year End Bubble Bonanza!  (Be patient… I need a wee rest too!)

Surprise Visit from Michael Bublé !

Well, sometimes a Monday morning brings a WHOLE UNEXPECTED SURPRISE! (To quote Fred Penner: What a day, what a day! Full of surprises!) Last week it was the hatching of our first Painted Lady Butterfly. This week it was a quick visit by the ever-so-famous singer, Mr. Michael Bublé and his lovely wife, Luisana! It seems that Michael is quite familar with Nestor school!

Naturally we brought him down to see OUR classroom, and it turns out that they are both a real `animal fans`… Michael knew all about walking stick insects (who would have guessed that!) and Luisana has helped saved thousands of animals by supporting  http://www.fundaco.org/.  Michael took a turn to hold Spotty, our leopard gecko, and Luisana petted Fluffy, our teddy bear hamster. We showed them our Painted Lady pupas and then took them down to the library, where we have placed our `Butterfly Pavilion`. When Mrs. Boekhout heard that Luisana had never held a butterfly on her finger, she just KNEW that Luisana NEEDED a turn in the butterfly tent. Getting one to land on your finger is not always that easy, so a student went into the tent and helped her! It was very exciting for us alland it was nice that we could give THEM somethingexciting to remember too!

When Michael and Luisana came back to the classroom, we took a group photo. It`s too bad that we didn`t have time to sing them a song, but he`s a pretty busy guy. Naturally we introduced him to Monty Moose, and told him about his world travels. Michael and Monty just seemed to hit it off as buddies right away… but who could believe it when Michael said that it would be great if Monty could go to ROME WITH HIM next week! Wowsers! Monty packed his bag (hahaha!), gave Mrs. B. a very quick kiss, and then headed right out the door with Michael.  Mrs. B. still is shaking her head, wondering what happened!

Whew! I hope they get some good photos because we`ll post them on Monty`s website!

Parent Tea

It is pretty hard to follow up the “Teacher Appreciation Day” because our parents spoil us so royally!   We do our best, however, to show our wonderful parents how much their support means to us at the annual “Parent Tea“.  Too bad I didn’t take some photos of the delicious treats that somehow “disappeared” while we all socialized! I think the parents enjoyed the teachers’ baking! I really enjoyed getting to chat, although rather shortly, with those of “my parents” who were able to attend.  I also got to chat with some of my “old parents” too!

A highlight of the Parent Tea is the musical performance by some of our Nestor students.  This year, the Grade 2 students performed two numbers:  “Never Smile at a Crocodile” and “Doh a Deer”.  They did a fabulous job… and even remembered to show off their beautiful smiles!

THANK YOU, TO OUR PARENTS… YOU ARE THE BEST!

Easter Egg Trees

Here’s a NEW WAY to celebrate the beauty of NATURE and SPRING…

transform old, dead branches into AMAZING EGG TREES!

1. read a lovely old story by Katherine Milhouse, “The Egg Tree”
2. collect your branches and stands
2. blow out your eggs (!)
3. transform your branches into Springtime Blossom Trees
4. paint your blown eggs and hang them from your trees
5. finish off with some egg-citing decorations

Voila! Beautiful Egg Trees to celebrate the season!

We hope you had an EGG-xcellent and HOPPY Easter!

Classroom Energy Diet Challenges… what Amazing Learning!

The Classroom Energy Diet Activities Challenge and Video Challenge have now drawn to a close.  We may or may not win any “prizes”, but we certainly have done TONS of learning in ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS, SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE, MATH… and also in CO-OPERATION, HELPING EACH OTHER, and… FILM  PRODUCTION!  We also had a lot of FUN in the LEARNING!

Mrs. Boekhout is thrilled to see how the class has been more aware of  how THEY can MAKE A DIFFERENCE by simple acts like recycling, thinking about how they can use less energy, and SHUTTING THE DOOR on cold days!  (Hmmm… didn’t Mrs. Boekhout originally join this challenge because Classroom2Kids could never remember to shut the door???)

Mrs. Boekhout and Classroom2Kids would like to thank Canadian Geographic and Shell Canada, and especially Ellen Curtis for her wonderful support in times of  technical disasters, for this amazing learning experience and the chance to show that even “LITTLE KIDS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE” to help our planet!

Here are some of our photos “along the way” !!!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported us!
