Student Blogs

We are very excited to ANNOUNCE that Classroom 2 Kids 2010/11 has started its FIRST STUDENT BLOGS

For our first entries, we chose a very simple topic… “something we are interested in“.  Each student wrote a short line in Microsoft Word about their topic (Hallowe’en celebrations were a popular choice!).   The emphasis is on getting our ideas out… so we have to sound out words that we don’t know and use our best invented spellings.    We were introduced to  “spell check” in MSWord, just as an extra help for making our words readable.  (Note: Even MSWord can’t help sometimes!!!)

Mrs. Boekhout made individual pages for us in the “ABOUT OUR CLASS” section of the Edublog.  https://classroom2kids.edublogs.org/about/

Next, we learned about “How to Make a Good Blog Comment” from Ms. McGeady’s school blog ( http://2kmblog.globalstudent.org.au/how-to-comment-on-2kms-blog/).   Her tips are:

How to write a good quality comment…  BY MRS. K. McGEADY

  1. Write your comment like a letter starting off with “Dear 2KM” or “Dear Miss McGeady”.
  2. Compliment the writer in a specific way, ask a question, and/or add new information to the post.
  3. Write your comment about the post. There are often ideas at the bottom of the post about what you could comment about.
  4. Check your comment for correct spelling, spacing and punctuation before you submit it.
  5. Don’t reveal any personal information about yourself in your comment.
  6. Be nice!

We were given “popsicle stick” partners (that’s where your name is drawn out of a jar) for pairing up to write blog comments.  It was a little tricky, because you have to put in an email (we used a fake school email) and you have to type in a long anti-spam word to prove that you aren’t a WEB-BOT SPIDER!  (Isn’t that funny!!!)

Not everyone has finished their blog comment yet, but we are looking forward to reading them when they are done!  The first turns were done all together in the lab, but now that we have an idea of what we are doing (!) we are going to take turns writing blogs and comments on the classroom computers.  We hope it works out!

We would like to WELCOME PARENTS to add comments too!

We are being careful not to identify students by last names, so Parents should use either their FIRST NAMES or else call themselves by “student’s first name Mom/Dad”.n (eg. Billy’s Mom,  Susie’s Dad)

Please note that all comments are MODERATED by Mrs. Boekhout. This means that your comment will not show up right away.  Mrs. B. will check it over first, so that we don’t publish anything that isn’t NICE!!!

We look forward to adding our OWN ideas to the Classroom 2 Kids Edublog, and to reading YOUR comments too!

Going on a Bear Hunt!

There’s a bear over there… where?… THERE!!!

After seeing that LIVE bear in Nestor Park, we were inspired to learn more about the American Black Bear.  Thanks to Mrs. Boekhout’s neighbour, a big STUFFED bear came to visit our class.  He looked exactly like a real bear cub! (One of our custodians even borrowed the bear to give the teaching assistant a big fright, after he got a fright himself, when cleaning our desks after school!)

It was really interesting to learn the “bear facts” about this local wildlife.   We think we know why the real bear came to visit Nestor… there are lots of blackberries growing along the park edge, and he was probably trying to fatten up for his winter (partial) hibernation.  (Those are the same plant that Mrs. B. feeds to our walking stick insects!)  The bear we saw was almost as long as our whiteboard! (one and one-half meters) and probably had 4 cm. long claws!  By 6 months old, cubs weigh as much as we do in Grade 2! Most of us knew that bears are omnivores (eat meat and plants too), like humans, but we also learned that they are plantigrades, like humans… we both walk flat on our feet.  Bears are strong, run fast, swim well, and like to climb.  The famous white “B.C. Spirit Bear” is actually a kind of black bear!  Black bears are not all black (isn’t that funny!), they can be blonde, cinnamon, and brown too!

We also learned about BEAR SAFETY.  If you see a bear, don’t run away and don’t approach it.  STAY CALM! Speak softly so that the bear doesn’t get a surprise that someone is there. Back away slowly.  Get indoors.

Even though bears can be dangerous, we were still glad that we live in a community that values and welcomes nature!

Thank you, Mrs. C., for sharing YOUR bear with us!
We really felt he should have a name though.  Our classroom teddy bears are named StrawBEARy and BlueBEARy, so we decided to call your bear BlackBEARy, of course!  We hope you like his new name!

October 15 update: Fish, Terry Fox, Buttons, Kidspiration, HRC!

Splish, Splash!  We have 2 new fish in our tropical fish tank. They are female guppies to go with our Fire Phoenix male guppies. Another name for them is Sunrise guppies. Now we have four guppies.  We really like them.  “Guppy” is a funny name, isn’t it!  We hope they make friends with the other fish in our tank.  Table 1

Ready, set, go!  Our Principal took some Grade 5 runners and a couple of the teachers to run 6 km. to the Terry Fox Foundation in PoCo!  That’s a long way!  There’s a statue of Terry Fox.  The whole school watched them start off, and everybody cheered!  They will have to run hard but not too fast, so that they can make it all the way. Our school raised over $600 for Terry Fox.  Table 2

They’re soft, they’re squishy, they’re bright yellow, and they’re coming to OUR houses!  Buttons and Buttons Junior are the first classroom stuffies to start visiting. They have funny big belly buttons.  We get to play with them until the next day.  One student took them into his back yard, but little Buttons Jr. fell off the swing! Oops!  Be careful, Buttons Jr.!!!  Table 3

Do you know what food group carrots are in?  bananas?  corn flakes?  tuna?  yoghurt?   The food groups are fruits and vegetables,  breads and cereals, meat-fish and alternates, milk and milk products. We had fun putting foods in the right groups using Kidspiration at the Computer Lab.  We got to drag the stamps into the right columns and then print out our picture.  Table 4

Smile!  We’re happy to be at Nestor school and you can see the wonderful faces we made in the front hall outside the office.  Everyone in the school is drawing, coloring, or painting their face to go on the wall!  There will be over 300 faces when we finish!  We made our faces at our Gr.2-Gr.5 Buddy time.  Half the class was in our room and half the class went to our Buddy classroom.  Some of us are really good at drawing!  Table 5

… and the Great Book Award goes to… LOTS of different books!  Our first Home Reading Club sheets started to come in last week.    We have heard about SO many different great books.  There were picture books, chapter books, and some really funny stories! Now we have almost EVERYONE in the class working on their second sheet, which is 40 nights of reading!  We get a certificate, a special bookmark, and everyone claps for us.  Table 6

We are trying out a new way of sharing our Week’s activities. There isn’t space to tell “everything”, so each table of students chose one topic to talk about.

Table 5 is getting the first turn to choose the blog writing of the week!

Table 5 was excited to tell about the BEAR we saw at Nestor Park! Yes! A real, live, wild black bear! Mr. Della Vedova, our principal, came in through our classroom door after his Running Club practice to say that something REALLY ex citing was happening and that he was on his way to make an announcement to say that everyone had to come inside. We took turns to look through the window, because OF COURSE it is not safe or responsible to interfere with a wild animal. We were SO EXCITED though! Mrs. Boekhout did a hand count, and one-third of the class (one out of every three students) had NEVER seen a bear before! The bear was sitting in the park, just like a great big teddy bear (only WE KNOW that wild bears are dangerous!) He sat there for at least 10 minutes until he finally got up and walked slowly away through the park. Our school Custodians and noon-hour supervisors watched safely from the parking lot to make sure that all students were safely inside. Our visiting teachers from Switzerland were even MORE excited than we were, because they were SO HOPING to see a real Canadian bear before they went back home. Mrs. Deyle, who visited in our classroom, gave us her photos of the bear. How lucky we are, at Nestor School, to be in a neighbourhood that has nature so close at hand!

Table 6 wanted to tell about our latest addition to our class pets… tropical fish! Mrs. B. went to Roberto’s Pet Habitat at lunch and brought back our fish in plastic bags. The bags had to float in the fish tank for a long time until the water in the bags was the same temperature as the water in the fish tank. The next day we got to see them swimming in the fish tank… they looked happy! There were bright neon tetras that glow in the dark, colourful orange platies that were short and fat, fire phoenix guppies with fancy yellow and red tails that look like fire, a bronze catfish with funny little whiskers, and a very fast golden algae eater that is long and thin. We hope they like the pirate ship and the castle with the moving drawbridge in our classroom fish tank.

Table 1 liked all the learning we have been doing with Math Patterns. We have been making patterns with blocks, drawing patterns, and figuring out how to make the same pattern in lots of different ways. We liked doing pattern making activities on the computer. We played pattern making games and we also made our own patterns using KidPix stamps. At calendar time we have figured out that the pattern is “pumpkin, pumpkin, ghost” but Mrs. Boekhout is challenging us to see if the patterns also go DOWN the calendar. Now we are looking for patterns on the hundreds chart too!

Table 2 wanted to talk about our Spelling work this week. We did Scholastic Spelling Lesson #3 and practiced by writing down the words in a Pretest, by writing the words in our Spelling books, by doing a worksheet asking questions about the words, and by going to SpellingCity.com to play some spelling games online! The games were the MOST FUN way to practice! On Fridays we have a spelling test to see what new words we have learned to spell. Then we fill in a Spelling Graph to show how many words we knew at the beginning of the week, and how many MORE words we can spell at the end of the week! We also learn 5 “Word Wall Doozers” at our “Oral Language Skills” time before Calendar. We practice by saying the words out loud, by writing them in the air, and by writing them on our arms. Mrs. Boekhout calls that “kinesthetic learning”. Some people learn best by looking, some by hearing the words, and some by writing with a body movement. On Fridays we have a “Word Wall Quiz” where we have to call out the spellings. Then the 5 words go up on the Word Wall… and we are NEVER allowed to spell them wrong again… because we can SEE THEM right on the wall!!!

Table 3 enjoyed our first two Buddy times. Our “Big Buddies” are in Mrs. Torres’ Grade 5 class. The first time we met, we drew pictures of each other! Some of the pictures were pretty funny, but we are learning to find ways to encourage each other about our drawings. The next time we met we worked on turkey pictures. The big buddies helped us color in the feathers and cut out the pieces. It was fun talking with our buddies while we worked. At the end of our time, Mrs. Boekhout had us make “Gobble, Gobble” good-byes to each other… that was funny!

Table 4 talked about our special event coming up… Thanksgiving Weekend! We learned about turkeys this week. We read a book about wild and domestic turkeys. We shared our “Turkey homework” and learned lots of turkey facts, for example, the Tom Turkey is the male and he has the fancy tail feathers and is the one that says “gobble”. We did a worksheet on turkey anatomy (Do you know what these are: Wattle? Beard? Spur? Caruncle?) We made turkey pictures (the tail feathers had turkey words in alphabetic order) with our Gr. 5 buddies. It was really fun doing the Turkey Trot on the top field. The whole school participated. Riley was the lucky one to win the Turkey Trot prize!

Mrs. Boekhout’s “Pick of the Week” is our story “The Golden Rule”. This beautiful story told us how every religion of the world has its own way of expressing a wonderful rule to live by. That rule is: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It doesn’t matter how you express it, the meaning is the same! If you wouldn’t like someone to do something to you… then don’t do it to someone else! As the little boy in the story says to his Grandpa, wouldn’t it be wonderful if people, countries, and the whole world lived by this rule! However, we can only be accountable for ourselves, so let’s just see if WE can live by this rule OURSELVES!

BTS – It’s Back to School Time!

Welcome back

  Welcome TO
all our NEW Nestor students!

This is our “Classroom Edublog”!

What is an Edublog?  Well, for one thing, it’s a great place to share our pictures, stories, and exciting events!

The word Edublog comes from “Educational” and from “Weblog” (blog).  A Web-log is simply a kind journal, or “log”, that is kept on the Internet Web.   Why is the Internet called the “World Wide Web”? That’s because the Internet lets people make all kinds of connections from all around the world!

new_mc

This is the first time Mrs. Boekhout is starting off the school year with an Edublog, so it’s very exciting! (Classroom2Kids was only created last May!)

familyani

We look forward to getting comments from our parents… it will be fun to hear how you like our work!  We also look forward to comments from other people… maybe from far-off places!  (All comments are moderated by Mrs. Boekhout first, so we don’t have to worry about anything inappropriate.)

Watch for our first entries!
We look forward to hearing from you!

Student Letters

We have been busy writing letters to our friends in Michigan, USA and Woody Beaver (who is on an “exchange stuffie” project with Swingwaage Wolverine!) We thought it might be fun to post our letters and tell you a bit about our wonderful community and classroom!

Go to our “About Our Class” page to read the letters and maybe tell us about your community too!
About Our Class

Hope to hear from you!

Grade 2s sharing technology!

Mrs. Brancati and Mrs. Boekhout had a special “Technology Show & Tell” this week!

Our two classes are the very FIRST  at Nestor School to have experimented with creating their own “Edublogs”, so we decided to show each other what we have done so far.  The students were excited to investigate each others’ blogs and did a great job of explaining and navigating through their own class blogs.

Seeing as the “two Mrs. Bs” have linked the two Edublogs, BOTH classes have the opportunity to view the ongoing updates in the respective classes!  We hope you are showing your parents as well!

Remember…
You are welcome to make blog comments… just remember your “How to Make a Great Blog” instructions! (greeting, RELEVANT content, closing)

Here’s what we looked like “in action”… it was noisy, but it was all “ON TASK” noisy! (Check out some of the hairdos for our school “Crazy Hair Day”!!!)
