Happy Summer – Part 3: Stuffie Picnic

If you go down to the Nestor woods today… you’re in for a big SURPRISE… because today was the STUFFIE PICNIC!  We had lots of STUFFIE FRIENDS to help us with Calendar and Clues & Questions! There was SO MUCH really GOOD FOOD for lunch.  We had ICE CREAM FLOATS and STUFFIE RACES too! It was a special way to end our Classroom 2 year of Grade 2!

Happy Summer Holidays… Part 1!

We are now on our “official Summer Holidays” but Mrs. B. has not finished with the Classroom2Kids Edublog yet!  (Mrs. B. hasn’t even finished dismantling the classroom either!  Oh dear!)

Her first project was to upload the “almost finished” Butterfly Life Cycle slideshows on the Student Blogs. Hurray! You will now find them uploaded!

https://classroom2kids.edublogs.org/about/student-blogs-classroom2kids/

A new addition for this year is the INVITATION to BLOG OVER THE SUMMER!  I think it would be a great way for the class to keep in touch, so I am inviting you all to tell us what you are doing on your holidays!  You can make comments to your classmates and even add photos… (but remember… no closeup photos of you in your own blog because it’s not “web smart” for students to put their photo in a place that also has their name!)

I’m hoping to READ some GREAT BLOGS over the summer!

Be watching too… I will be uploading some slideshows of the Year End Stuffie picnic,  Butterfly Freedom Day, and the Gr. 2 Year End Bubble Bonanza!  (Be patient… I need a wee rest too!)

Sports Day!

Rain, Rain, go or stay,
we don’t care
when it’s SPORTS DAY!

So… this year we got the excitement of an INDOOR Sports Day! (Mrs. B. had only just finished setting up her outdoor “Cracker and Whistle” race, when the rain started to soggy up the crackers!)

Some of the indoor races were the same as the outdoor races, but some of the MOST FUN races were exclusive to an Indoor Sports Day!  The Stack and Build competitions were FANTASTIC (even if Mrs. B. had to scold some parents for spoiling the “I can do it by myself” pride) and we still got to do the Sponge and Water race in the undercover area.  The three big KEYNOTES for Sports Day are FUN! GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP! EXERCISE!  We definitely had all three of these, with only a little reminder or two for “appropriate behaviour”.  The final scores were SO CLOSE that I won’t even comment!

We had a WONDERFUL SPORTS DAY!

HighTech Science and “Earthworks”

It’s dark, it’s mucky, it’s under your fingernails!… Do you go “Yuck”? Do you head for the soap and water? NO WAY! You slip on your white lab coat, take out a magnifying glass, and stroke your chin saying, “Verrrrry interesting!”

You’re a scientist called a Geologist!

Today we got the chance to transform our classroom into “Particle Pete’s Science Lab”! As Scientists we knew we had to notice EVERYTHING, using all of our senses. (Oh… except for the sense of taste, that could be dangerous!) We learned how to “waft” a scent towards our noses and how to do the Scientist Safety Signal with our fingers in the air. Good scientists have good questions, curiosity, and imagination… but they need to LISTEN when the Head Scientist is talking!

We learned that the 4 ingredients of life are sun, water, air, and soil. Did you know that the sun is 4.6 BILLION years old and is about 149 MILLION kilometers away? Our first experiment showed how Solar Energy can be transformed into Mechanical Energy. It was such a rainy day that we needed to use a light, but we still were able to get the little windmill to turn. Then we did our own Water Cycle experiment. We made our little “clouds” soak up the water into the sky and then “rain down” again! The AirZooka was a BLAST (of AIR, that is!) High and low pressures make the air move to different places. That’s how we get wind!

Then we had to use our best observation skills to check out the different parts of soil: rocks, sand, silt, and humus. Did you know that it takes the Earth 500 years just to make 1 inch (3 cm.) of soil? We put them all together into a mini-mountain and used pipettes to “drop the rain” onto them. It didn’t take much for us to see the power of erosion by water! We also checked out the “holding capacity” of the different materials. Rocks let the water run through – that would make the ground too dry for plants to grow well. Clay wouldn’t let water through at all – that would drown plants! It’s important for good soil to have all the different components… especially the rich, nutritious humus.

Finally we had to chance to check out some of the Earth’s most important “soil creatures”… earthworms! They are a lot bigger than our classroom red wiggler compost worms, and they aren’t nearly as shy!

Particle Pete” gave us a great Science Workshop and he was a fun guy too (he even taught us a Water Cycle song!)
Thanks to “High Tech Science” for a great learning experience!

Here’s a fun idea… Hightouch Hightech Science is running SUMMER SCIENCE CAMPS!   You can also book a Scientist to come to a Birthday Party!

Taekwon-do “Black Belt Attitude”

FOCUS!       SHOW RESPECT!      SET GOALS!

You might think this is the front page of a School Planner, but it was actually part of a Martial Arts lesson on getting better grades in school!  Recently, we had an exciting visit from Mr. Reinelt of Triumph Taekwon-do and he introduced us to the “Black Belt Attitude“!

We learned about listening with your eyes, your body, and your mindRespect is one of the most important parts of Taekwon-do and no one… NO ONE… uses Taekwon-do if they are just mad at someone.  It is for self-defense only.     Some of the steps to improving yourself are to: focus, be organized, set goals, try your best, and use teamwork

Mr. Reinelt showed everyone how to do a proper “snap-kick” and then we had a competition between 2 students to see who could kick the most high kicks in a minute!  It was a tie!   We practiced our jumping up and ducking down by trying to escape the DREADED YELLOW NOODLES! Oh my!  Then we practiced teamwork in a game called Pass the Pizza!

It was a LOT of fun and laughing but we learned a lot too! Maybe some of us might even join Taekwon-do!  It would take a LONG time to become a 6th degree Black Belt like Mr. Reinelt though!!!  http://www.triumphtkd.com/instructors.html

 Here we are in action!

GYMNASTICS unit

EVERYONE at our school is SO excited after Spring Break… because… it is the time for our Gymnastics Equipment to take over the gym!

We are SO lucky to have our own set-up!  Before the equipment gets set up, however, we enjoy the freedom of running in the gym with BARE FEET and we also learn about being “indestructable kids“… who can jump and land SAFELY and who understand BASIC SAFETY RULES!  No show-offs! Only go as high as you FEEL SAFE! Three body parts on the climbing apparatus at all times! THINK before you ACT!

Winter Snow

*Let it snow! * Let is snow! * Let it snow! *

We FINALLY got some snow here!  It didn’t last long enough to build any snow forts, but we enjoyed it while it lasted!

Monty Moose had just come back from Montebello, Quebec, so he was glad to see we got some snow too.
Lucky Monty even got to go DOG SLEDDING in Quebec!

BOO to YOU! Happy Hallowe’en!

What a FRIGHTENINGLY FABULOUS Hallowe’en celebration at school! We started off our day with Hallowe’en Stations where the students traveled around the school to do different activities. In our room, Mrs. BOO-khout sang “Witches’ Brew” and “Looking for Dracula” and then played Hallowe’en Bingo. THe Nestor PAC put on a rousing set of races in the gym, with Mad Scientist Della Vedova narrowly losing to Princess Leia in the Pumpkin Roll! After lunch it was the HALLOWE’EN PARADE! The weather was GREAT and we got to take the parade outside. Our “Canada Food Guide Hallowe’en Party” was a yummy success. Our nutritious food was dressed up into monster toes, goblin fingers, scary dips, witches’ cauldrons, bloody pumpkins and MORE! We made a HORRIBLE Witches Brew (Shhh! no one was allowed to use words like delicious or tasty!) with slimy gummy worms, bat’s blood, Magic potions #7 and #3, zombie tidbits, and ghoulie guts! We lit the Jack o’Lanterns we had carved and played Hallowe’en Bingo. There were sweet treats to share and three people even brought goodie bags for everyone! What a FUN-TASTIC celebration!

Sports Day 2011!

1,  2,  3,  4

Who are we cheering for?

Our Team! Our Team!

Go! Go! Go!

What an exciting day!  The rain “rained itself out” the day before, so we had a fresh clean start to our activities.  The Blue Blasting Bananas, the  Canucks Green Men, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were on high energy mode all day!

After a BIG  BANNER team-building activity, we headed out to a “breakfast supplement” at our first station with the Cracker and Whistle race!  It was a good thing, because the second station was Tug-o-War… always a favorite!

Happy New Year 2011!

We’d like to wish everyone a wonderful 2011!  There’s sure to be lots happening!

Newyear

Our first big excitement is that Monty Moose is off traveling AGAIN!  He is going to be spending a few weeks in Mumbai, India!  This time he is going to be helping “Aunt Rosemary” teach quilting and other crafts to Indian ladies improving their lives by starting their own businesses!  That’s something pretty new for Monty, I’m not sure he even knows how to sew!!!  We hope he sends some good photos!

Speaking of photos… we now have our Christmas photos uploaded to our website.  We had the local Fire Fighters visit our school and make us pancakes… yum!   The PAC set up a wonderful Craft Fair so that we could buy secret presents for our families.  We made beautiful Yule Log Centerpieces as our gift to our families.  Whew!  It was a busy time!

If you would like to see the full set of photos, you will have to ask us for our password.
