Pumpkin Math ‘n Stuff!

We have been learning about Pumpkins… both at school and at home!  Our wonderful Nestor PAC arranged a “Pumpkin Patch” right in our own Nestor Park, and we used those pumpkins for a great Math Measuring activity.  We took those pumpkins home but then we got 6 more pumpkins to sit on our 6 Table desks.  We learned how to look with a “Scientist’s Eyes” and draw different perspectives of our pumpkins.  (Guess that was really a “Science in Art” project!)  At the end of the week, we had some Passionate Parents and Very-helpful Volunteers help us scoop out those oopy-goopy pumpkins to get out the seeds for a Math Ten Frame Counting activity.  Carving our “Jack o’Lanterns” was a cooperative-decision-making exercise for each table. (Oh… only the adults got to use the knives!)  All in all, it was a PUMPKIN-upped way to do some Science, Math, and Art!   We also got to decorate our classroom with some AWESOME JACK O’LANTERNS afterwards!

Here we are in action!

Computer Time Activities

Our Computer Lab time has been very busy already.  We are lucky to have TWO computer times!  Right now, we are learning how to use our two special online programs, Raz-Kids Reading and Mathletics Math.  We will also be learning to use KidPix, Kidspiration, Hour of Code, and later on in the year, we will even make our own Edublogs!  Whew!  That’s a lot!

Here we are at one of our Computer Blocks in the lab.

We were all doing “Just Right Reading” in Raz-Kids!

What do YOU like to do on the computer at school?

Be a “Zero Hero”

École Nestor Elementary School is working hard to become totally LITTERLESS, so we brought in the Planet Protectors from DreamRider Theater to present a fun-but-educational show about being a “Zero Hero”!  Esmerelda Planet Protector and her sidekick, Goober, worked hard to battle the Evil Dr. Carbon.  He wanted to put SMALL things in BIG packages, just to make money! I think Esmerelda won the day this time!

What are YOU doing to be a ZERO HERO?

Rainy Day Fun!

We have been very lucky to have only a little rain at recess and lunch, so we can still go outside.  After all, we are WEST COAST KIDS, so we don’t melt like sugar candy in the rain!  One day it was REALLY pouring, so we stayed inside.  Hey!  It’s actually fun to have recess INSIDE too! (Did you know that 25 out of the last 28 days it has been raining?)

Here are a few photos of our inside activities that day!

Hmmm… did you notice that some of us are actually busy building MATH PATTERNS for FUN!

What do YOU like to do inside on a Rainy Day?

Our first class photo!

We finally got all the class present on a day when Mrs. Boekhout remembered to take the photo!  Lucky us… Miss Dittrick happened to come by at just the right time.   Miss Dittrick took Mrs. Boekhout in the photo and Mrs. Boekhout took Miss Dittrick in the next photo… BUT… we added a little “Wacky Wednesday Twist” to Photo # 2!!!

When Mrs. Boekhout came across this book at the bookstore, she simply couldn’t resist buying it for Miss Dittrick!

So the class did a “special pose” with Miss Dittrick!

Reading and a-Rocking!

The new school year is starting to settle down to regular routines and our first book order arrived.  Mrs. Boekhout couldn’t resist ordering a 3 book and CD set of “Pete the Cat”!  The bright, sunny days are beginning to alternate with the soggy, doggy days of true Autumn, but when we hear “It’s an Inside Day today” on the PA system, we think of “Pete the Cat” !

Do we cry?

“Goodness, no!”

We just take out our snacks
and we sing this song:

“We love our classroom,
it’s fun for me and you!
Let’s play together,
there’s lots of stuff to do!”

Yeah!

It’s an Inside Day!

Bonus! You can listen to “Pete the Cat” online!

Eric Litwin reads his book “Pete the Cat” on YouTube.

Welcome Classroom 2 in 2016/17

Hello to my new Grade 2 Class!

It’s going to be a GREAT YEAR and here is where we will share some of our WONDERFUL ACTIVITIES with parents, grandparents, and special friends!

I hope that your families will enjoy this blog… and maybe they will even add their own COMMENTS too!

:-)

Mrs. Boekhout

Visiting Scientist!

Thanks to Science World’s Scientists & Innovators in Schools program, we were lucky enough to have a real Biologist, Ms. Baker, visit our classroom!  Having our own Classroom pets helped us give some good answers to her first questions about animal life, but then the surprises began!  We colored in some pictures of living organisms like birds and trees, as well as air, water, and sun and taped them to our shirts.  Then Ms. Baker handed each of the three groups a big ball of wool!  Too funny!  We had to make connections like… birds need water,  water helps trees grow,  trees make air… but every time we made a connection, we passed the ball of wool along!  Pretty soon it looked like a big spider web, but Ms. Baker explained that it was a web of lifeEverything is connected!  Now that we had the “big idea” we made posters showing all those connections!  No wonder we have to be careful with the environment… everything is connected!

Here we are in action!

How many connections did YOU make with the wool?
